Ascott NT
Ascott National Trust property is fairly close to where I live. It is between Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire and Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire. It is about a forty five minute drive away in the north of Buckinghamshire. It is a property we visited many years ago before we had Max, our dog, so at least eight years ago.
Unfortunately it was getting Max that prevented us from visiting anymore. Ascott and many other National Trust properties with big houses only allow dogs access to the parkland or woods if they have them. Dogs are not allowed in the houses, which is quite understandable but generally speaking they are not allowed in the gardens either. Ascott doesn’t even allow them in the Park. Anglesey Abbey also has a complete ban on dogs as well I believe, another nearby place we are now prevented from visiting. Maybe dog owners should get a reduction in the annual subscription ?
However the recent spell of hot weather has meant that we didn’t take Max out at all in the heat of the day so I took the this opportunity to visit Ascott alone for a couple of hours with my camera. You can tell from the photos there is a distinct lack of green on the lawns that it has been very hot and for quite a while. A summer that will be remembered for many years.
I didn’t remember much about the previous visit but when I arrived but it was much bigger than I remembered. So big that I only really had time to explore half of the park. There were some parts I remembered from the previous visit that I didnt see, mainly some the amazing topiary. I only came across one of them, the topiary sundial. This means I will now have to go again and by then it might well have greened up as well.
